What Is OCD and How Can Therapy Help?

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) affects people differently. For some, it might involve rituals like excessive handwashing or checking, while others struggle with intrusive, distressing thoughts. Therapy for OCD works to identify these patterns and develop strategies to lessen their hold on daily life.

Personalised Therapy Approaches for OCD

Therapy sessions are tailored to you, using evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). I work with you to gradually reduce the distress caused by OCD, helping you regain control over your thoughts and actions in a safe, supportive environment.

About Me:
OCD Therapist based in Edinburgh

I’m a fully trained CBT therapist based in Edinburgh with a special interest in supporting people who struggle with OCD. Under the guidance of my supervisor, who has decades of experience working specifically with OCD, I bring both informed methods and genuine empathy to each session. My practice follows NICE Guidelines, ensuring you receive evidence-based, best-practice care.

I understand how overwhelming and distressing it can be to live with OCD. My goal is to support you in finding effective strategies that bring relief as quickly as possible, helping you regain control and move forward with confidence.

Medication

Research has shown that medication, particularly antidepressants, can also help people with OCD. Antidepressants work by increasing the activity and amount of certain chemicals in the brain that affect mood, such as serotonin. Among the different types of antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often the most effective for treating OCD.

I recommend visiting your GP to discuss the possibility of medication, as combining medication with CBT can provide the best outcomes. Medication acts like wearing water wings; it helps reduce symptoms, making it easier for CBT to be effective. By alleviating the intensity of your symptoms, medication can help you engage more fully in therapy, allowing for more significant progress in managing OCD.

If you're considering medication, your GP can provide guidance on the best options for your situation and help you understand how SSRIs might benefit your treatment. The goal is to find a balanced approach that supports your recovery and improves your quality of life.
