OCD Therapy in Edinburgh
I am a CBT Therapist based in Edinburgh and have a special interest in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Using evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) techniques, I have successfully worked with clients experiencing OCD symptoms.
My compassionate approach, rooted within the NICE guidelines, is tailored to each individual's needs, aiming to reduce distress and improve quality of life. Whether you're dealing with intrusive thoughts, compulsions or anxiety, I'm here to support you on your journey to recovery.
OCD manifests in various forms, each with its unique challenges. Common types include Contamination OCD, characterised by an intense fear of germs and a compulsion to clean; Harm OCD, where individuals are plagued by intrusive thoughts of causing harm to themselves or others; and Symmetry OCD, which involves an overwhelming need for order and symmetry. Other forms include Pure Obsessional OCD (Pure O), focusing on mental rituals rather than physical ones, and Checking OCD, where individuals feel compelled to repeatedly check things for fear of causing harm.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to tell your therapist about the type of intrusive thoughts you endure. I want to assure you that I understand Harm OCD and other forms, and I provide a non-judgmental and supportive environment where you can openly discuss your experiences. My goal is to help you develop effective coping strategies, manage your symptoms and reclaim your life from the grips of OCD. Together, we will work towards your recovery, ensuring you feel understood and supported every step of the way
Medication
Research has shown that medication, particularly antidepressants, can also help people with OCD. Antidepressants work by increasing the activity and amount of certain chemicals in the brain that affect mood, such as serotonin. Among the different types of antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often the most effective for treating OCD.

I recommend visiting your GP to discuss the possibility of medication, as combining medication with CBT can provide the best outcomes. Medication acts like wearing water wings; it helps reduce symptoms, making it easier for CBT to be effective. By alleviating the intensity of your symptoms, medication can help you engage more fully in therapy, allowing for more significant progress in managing OCD.

If you're considering medication, your GP can provide guidance on the best options for your situation and help you understand how SSRIs might benefit your treatment. The goal is to find a balanced approach that supports your recovery and improves your quality of life.
